Want to Learn How to Applique?

Learning how to applique can open up a whole new world of sewing possibilities. Applique is often used to decorate quilts, home furnishings or clothing. Hand applique is one of my favourite techniques and I'm sure you will love this technique too once you learn some helpful tips.

If you have always wanted to learn how to applique, then you'll be excited to know that I am putting together a series of "how to applique videos", but I need you help. There are lots of different applique techniques. These include fusible machine and hand applique, needleturn applique, reverse applique, machine stitched raw edge applique and the list goes on.
So my question to you is what would you like me to cover in my how to applique resource, what questions do you have or what techniques would you like demonstrated?
In exchange I will happily forward to you a free applique design, so drop me an email at lenna@stitchingcow.com or contact me via my profile area to receive your free thank you gift from me.
Leaving a comment with your suggestions would be a tremendous insight for me. Please help me to make this a wonderful how to applique resource by letting me know what to include.

Thanks for all your hard work to keep us up to date with all the different projects. I also would like the needle turn applique method as I'm using the blanket stitch method at the moment.

This is wonderful. I would love to see more details re: needleturn - especially the corners - tips of leaves for example. Also I have never done raw edge applique . Would love to see how that is done !
Thanks

I love applique and I teach sometimes. I think if you had a tutorial about how to do points and sharp valleys in curves when needle turning would be great.

Hello Lenna,
I love your blog and thank you for sharing your heart.
I agree on the needleturn and the tips of leaves and valleys, but would also like to see how you do the twist in leaves or flowers, you know where they turn and the colors have a deeper color. I use the applique basting glue, I like it much better then the inner facing type that you iron onto the back of the fabric, which makes it to stiff for me. Look forward to your online classes.

Just when I think I've add enough blogs to follow, I find you!! I am so interested in needle turn applique. I've done a few on my own, but they were simple. I'd love to follow your blog and learn more. I'm interested in the other applique methods, as well. Thanks for doing this! I look forward to checking your blog every few days!

I am new to applique and would like to see how to use the mylar templates. I am unsure of how hold them in place while ironing the seam allowance over the edge. I will be following your blog to see your methods demonstrated.
Thanks.....Marj

Lenna,
Applique tutorials is a great idea! I would like to learn needleturn applique. I am especially curious how you handle inner points or as Carrie calls them, sharp valleys. I do the freezer paper technique now but would like to learn needleturn.
Thanks for asking. :-)

Have you also thought about what stitches you can use with the fusible method? I have used rayon thread with a tight zigzag, but a regular or only slightly compressed zigzag with cotton thread also looks good. Machine blanket stitch in a contrasting colour or black looks good and just a straight stitch on fabrics that don't fray can also give a nice messy look.

Hi Lenna, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I would like to learn how to do needleturn with high relief, I saw it on a forum and it looks gorgeous. I tried to write an email to you but there is something wrong. My email is jrivero@ine.gov.bo. I am from Bolivia.
Thanks and a big hug

Thanks for agreeing to show us some methods on appliquing. I need help on the needleturn applique method. I have been using the back basting method which seems to be pretty easy, also.

Thanks again.

you are such a darling for wanting to share your joy & knowledge- minus the frustration of perhaps us picking up a bit here and a bit there & missing that wee bit needed...I would love any help-tips for applique quilting. Also your advise of the use of the `products' iron on-fusables-etc...vs the ol' turn the edge with your finger? thanks sooooo much

Applique - oh boy oh boy!! Please show hand applique - needle turn, ways to get smooth edges, concave and convex shapes, fusible with interfacing and/or glue, appliquing small shapes, using freezer paper.

More interested in hand than machine applique - but if you are doing Machine Applique - I will certainly read and learn!!

I am just learning how to do this art form and any tips on using fusable webbing with iron temp etc and what to do if it starts to lift after ironing would be a grat help

Needle turn tips would be great. How to do the deep valley of the heart would be great. Also how to work on black fabric would also be great such as how to transfer the design and placement for non needle turn methods.

Thanks in advance of these tutorials.

Hopefully it will come as a DVD as well. I haven't done very much applique, so don't know a lot about it, I would like to know more about, both needle-turn and raw edge methods. I find it is helpful to see it being done, then I can pause the dvd/video and follow along.
thanks
Pip
