Do you have a special little girl to share this pretty cloth doll pdf pattern with?

Let me introduce you. Her name is Miss Lucy Lou, the name my very own special little girl picked out for her. She is dressed in her best floral dress and little cropped felt jacket ready to go to town.

Lucy Lou is a quick and easy cloth doll to make. Once you know a few tricks for making cloth dolls, the sky is the limit. The most important technique is the transferring of and sewing of the limbs. If you trace the limbs onto your fabric and then sew on the drawn line, the process is super easy. Another tip is to reduce your stitch length and choose a thread colour to match your fabric. This lightening of the stitches makes the seams stronger so that they withstand firm stuffing.

Miss Lucy Lou Cloth Doll PDF pattern

If you have not made a cloth doll before, here is your chance. Miss Lucy Lou is available as a a PDF downloadable pattern which means you could be making her within minutes! She comes with easy step by step instructions and colour progress photographs to help you every step of the way.
I am sure that she will bring a smile to a little girl, or be the perfect addition seated on a chair in your home.

Many years ago I stumbled across a button dolly and was immediately taken in. Perhaps it was the excitement of having a worthy project for some of the many buttons in my button collection, or perhaps it was the simplicity of the doll that appealed to me. Whatever the reason, I decided to have a go at making my very own version for you to enjoy.

Since colonial days women have been making dolls from leftover buttons for their children to play with. These delightful button dolls are still popular today, although are used as decorative items rather than toys.

The biggest decision was sorting through some of my button draws trying to decide which buttons to use.

The process of making the dolly is quite simple once you get going.

And I couldn't resist in making her a primitive style dress and garden hat.

Here is some advice about what you need to know before making your first quilt.

As a beginner, the task of making your first quilt can seem very daunting.
But have no fear, help is here!

In order to get started, you will require some basic supplies which will aid you in creating your quilt. A rotary cutter will allow you to cut through several layers of fabric. They are quite sharp so it is important to take care when using one.

You will also need to invest in a cutting mat. These come in different sizes, as do the rotary cutters themselves, and are self-healing and include grid lines which help make your cutting much more accurate. In quilting, accuracy is very important in terms of having a clean, streamline finish. In order to get the best accuracy with your cutting, a rotary ruler will help you make your cutting as accurate as possible-especially if you have a steady hand! Other pieces of equipment you will require include cotton fabric, cotton thread, fabric scissors and a pencil or fabric pen which will allow you to mark out patterns on fabrics ready for cutting. You also need to decide if you will be using a sewing machine or piecing by hand.

Click here for more information about - What is a rotary cutter and tips for rotary cutting success

Rotary cutter, mat and ruler supplied by Flickr

It is a good idea before starting your first quilt to also educate yourself on the different elements of your quilt including fabrics, batting and colourway. When picking fabrics, take into consideration the thickness and quality of the fabrics. It is best to work with quality 100% quilting fabrics. Your choice of fabrics will aid in achieving a completed quilt you can be proud of, so do not rush this process. If you have difficulty choosing fabrics that look good together, choose fabric from the same fabric range, this will ensure a coordinated look.

Batting is a another important factor to consider, your choice will depend on whether you are going to hand quilt or machine quilt your first project. Wool, cotton and bamboo batting are all popular choices for quilters.

These are all important consideration and things you should know before making your first quilt, but above all...enjoy it! Quilting making is a fantastic way to have fun and be creative, whilst also creating something lovely to snuggle into on those chilly nights. And don't be afraid of making mistakes, often they are our best teachers!

If you still feel overwhelmed and need a hand to get going, try my online sewing and quilt making program.

Rotary cutters are probably the most dangerous part of quilting, so here are
a few tips to help with your rotary fabric cutting.

*Always cover the blade with the built-in cover when you set it down.
Get into the habit of doing this every time you use the rotary cutter.
An exposed blade can be very dangerous, and a nick in the blade can cause problems when cutting.

Quilting rotary cutter and ruler - graphic supplied by Laura Dahl

* When using your rotary cutter, always cut away from your body, not towards you.

* Use a quilt making ruler and quilting mat when cutting, don't be tempted to cut fabric
without these.Keep fingers well out of the way.It is best to position your hand flat over
the ruler and then apply download pressure as you cut through the fabric.

I am not an expert when it comes to crochet which is why I was puzzled last week trying to master a simple Granny square crochet pattern! The pattern had an easy rating yet here I was struggling.

My first attempt turned into a crocheted mat for my daughter's dolls house and my second attempt was claimed by my eldest daughter and made into a trendy headband. While both daughters were extremely pleased with their new items I was beginning to get a "tad frustrated".

Then it dawned on me. I was using an American pattern but had been taught to crochet by my Grandmother, the British way.

Those of you who crochet will understand that the terminology used is quite different, which can be a trap for "young players" like myself. Fortunately I managed to demystify this problem and my Granny square progress has improved.

For those of you who need a helping hand when it comes to British and American terms, I have included a table for you here which will shed some light on the matter.

British vs American English Crochet Patterns

British Crochet Terms

American Crochet terms

double crochet (dc)

single crochet (sc)

half treble (htr)

half double crochet (hdc)

treble (tr)

double crochet (dc)

double treble (dtr)

treble (tr)

triple treble (trtr)

double treble (dtr)

miss

skip

tension

gauge

yarn over hook (yoh)

yarn over (yo)

As you can see the same stitch name can refer to different stitches. It is n0 surprise that my crocheted Granny squares were wonky! The best way to tackle this problem is to refer to the crochet stitch reference included with the pattern. Most quality patterns will include this information for you. Look for the Double Crochet stitch as a reference, then you will know whether the crochet pattern is British or American.

Hope this has shed some light on the variations between British and American crochet stitches .

Every now and again I come across a special book that I just fall in love with, Secret Garden by Johanna Basford is such a book. Truth is I cannot claim to discovering it. A dear friend of mine stumbled across it and brought it with her when she called in for coffee a few weeks ago.

From the very first page I was hooked and vowed then and there that Secret Garden was to become part of my book collection. If you enjoy hand embroidery, then this book is definitely for you. Packed with the most amazing line drawings, this book will delight and inspire you.

As I turned each page my mind immediately began spinning as I thought of countless ways some of these designs could be adapted for hand embroidery and then incorporated into a variety of projects.

Here is a sample of what you can find in the book:

The author, Johanna Basford has done a stunning job in bringing this book to life. The back cover of the book gives a perfect insight into what readers can expect.
I am very proud to have Secret Garden in my book collection and will be keeping a keen eye on this author in the hope that there will be more to come.

The Quilters' Easter Showcase was a wonderful day at Brighton, Tasmania last Saturday. Approximately 260 quilters gathered together for a day of sewing with friends. Wonderful quilts were shared and admired during the "show and tell" and a variety of stall holders were in attendance with lots of goodies to sell.

Stitching Cow was amongst the stall holders and it was wonderful to see some familiar faces from last year and to meet some new quilters as well. Our two table were packed and overflowing with fabrics, patterns, kits and some amazing timber sewing accessories that have been hand crafted by my father who dabbles in wood turning.

Here are some of the lovely timber sewing accessories that were on offer.
